Joe Bocanegra (Jonathan Cristancho Avendaño Bocanegra) is a textile artist and fashion designer whose work explores the intersection of ancestral Amazonian materials and contemporary textile practices. He studied Fashion Design at the University of Art in Linz, Austria, where he developed his passion for art, social causes, and minimalism. Over the past five years, Bocanegra has worked collaboratively with artisans, Indigenous communities, and artists, challenging conventional ideas of consumption, value, and luxury. His practice centers on yanchama, a natural bark textile traditionally used by Amazonian communities, which he transforms through pattern making and hand embroidery using metallic and phosphorescent threads. Currently based in Vélez, Santander, Colombia, his work engages with local embroidery traditions, creating dialogue between territories, cultural knowledge, and material innovation. His projects include his personal brand Joe Bocanegra, the collaborative brand Chirimoya, and the experimental laboratory El Cubo de Chirimoya.
